A Bridgewater Summer, By The Addresses That Just Changed

Two things are true about Bridgewater right now. The free Sunday-night calendar at Duke Island Park looks almost identical to last year, and the retail spine along Routes 22 and 202 does not. If you have lived here for more than a season, the interesting question is not what to do this weekend. It is which storefronts have flipped since the last time you drove past them, and which openings on the calendar are worth planning around.

This is a field guide to both.

The Sunday evening that hasn't moved

The county's free concert series at Duke Island Park is the summer anchor most residents already know, and it runs on a tighter window than people remember. The 2026 Summer Concert Series will run from July 12 through Aug. 9 at Duke Island Park, with a new band each Sunday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and admission and parking are free. Five Sundays, then it is over.

A couple of practical notes that shape how the evening actually works:

Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair for seating on the grass. A selection of food trucks will be on site and may vary from week to week. Visitors may also bring their own cooler with snacks and drinks. The county notice states that alcohol and smoking are not permitted in the park.

The lineup leans tribute. Starman plays a David Bowie tribute on Aug. 2 and High in the Mid 80's closes the series with 80s pop on Aug. 9. If you have out-of-town family in July or August, this is the low-effort evening plan.

What changed on Route 202 this spring

Route 202 south of I-287 has quietly been the most active piece of Bridgewater real estate this year. Three restaurants alone have changed the character of the drive:

• Chick-fil-A Bridgewater Towne Center. The township's first location. A new Chick-fil-A restaurant began serving the Bridgewater community at its first location on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 6:30 a.m., with Paul Daniels as the local Owner-Operator of Chick-fil-A Bridgewater Towne Center. The address is 754 US Hwy 202, with hours Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., offering dine-in, drive-thru, carry-out, third-party delivery, mobile pick-up and Mobile Thru.
• Barrio Burrito Bar. Barrio Burrito Bar is opening its first New Jersey location in Bridgewater, at 726 Route 202 in the Bridgewater Towne Center between European Wax Center and Great Clips, replacing the former Smoothie King. The Mexican restaurant serves Tex-Mex with made-to-order burritos, bowls, tacos, and more.
• Mauka Indian Cuisine. A family-run BYOB near the Branchburg line. Driving down Route 202, you can't help but notice the fresh new paint job, a newly paved parking lot, new signage, and lights announcing the opening of Mauka Indian Cuisine at 793 Route 202 in Bridgewater. The menu features a variety of soups, salads, Tandoori sizzlers, entrees featuring chicken, lamb, goat and seafood, and also vegetarian and vegan entrees.

Three openings inside the same two-mile stretch, all in the past few months. If you have not driven the length of Route 202 recently on purpose, that is the drive to take.

The mall is not the mall you remember

Bridgewater Commons is in the middle of a multi-year tenant reset, and the pace of it accelerated this year. Bridgewater Commons is continuing a multiyear push to add new retail and dining tenants, with two recent openings and more stores and expansions planned throughout 2026 at the Somerset County mall.

Two openings that are already live:

• On Jan. 28, Anthropologie opened in a 9,577-square-foot space on the Main Level by Bloomingdale's, carrying fashion, home furnishings and décor, garden items and gifting. The location also includes Anthropologie Weddings, with bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, accessories and wedding stylists, and Bridgewater Commons said it is Anthropologie's only wedding service location in New Jersey. The wedding piece is the sleeper detail. If you have a daughter or a friend planning a NJ ceremony, that appointment used to require a trip out of the county.
• On March 9, Popeyes opened a new 644-square-foot location in the mall's food court.

Still to come this year: Rowan opening a 1,034-square-foot studio for ear piercing and hypoallergenic jewelry in the second quarter, and Pandora reopening in a larger 1,050-square-foot space on the Main Level near lululemon. In the third quarter, Aerie is scheduled to open an expanded 9,839-square-foot store on the Upper Level next to American Eagle, and in the fourth quarter, OFFLINE by Aerie is planned for Aerie's former 2,907-square-foot space on the Main Level, with activewear and athleisure apparel and accessories.

For the food side of the property, Fogo de Chão opened on Monday, June 24 at 400 Commons Way across from Uncle Julio's and Cheesecake Factory, and as part of its introduction to Bridgewater the restaurant donated a portion of its first week of sales to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.

Route 22 is still becoming something

If Route 202 is the corridor that finished changing, Route 22 is the corridor mid-change. The most talked-about arrival is not open yet, but it is approved and worth putting on the mental map.

The Bridgewater Township Planning Board unanimously approved the Clubhouse of Somerset County LLC's application on Oct. 21 to convert the former Safavieh building at 1213 Route 22 West, which closed in September. The interior changes include the construction of a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen and installation of 12 golf simulator suites, with 10 on the first floor and two VIP suites on the second floor, plus multiple bar and dining areas and casual lounges. A twelve-bay indoor golf facility inside the old rug showroom is a substantial rethink of that stretch of highway.

Nearby, Starbucks is coming to Route 22 near the Interstate 287 interchange in Bridgewater, with the Township Zoning Board of Adjustment approving the application at its June 24 meeting. The location is next to the Stone Tavern on Route 22 East near Morgan Lane just before the I-287 South ramp. And Land Rover is looking to build its second Somerset County location in Bridgewater off Route 22, with the Planning Board approving a plan on April 8 for a single-story building of about 24,831 square feet including a new car showroom, offices, and a Land Rover automotive service center with 11 service bays.

For a restaurant that is already open on the same corridor, Stone Tavern took over the former Houlihan's off Route 22, serving wood-fire steaks, seafood and burgers, 600 degree oven pizza, authentic Italian dishes and a full bar with 14 TVs.

The Patriots, on a schedule

TD Bank Ballpark is the summer's most reliable weeknight plan, and worth remembering when a Tuesday feels long. Home stands are stacked through the season, including a Hartford Yard Goats series in late June and additional home games in July, per the team's published calendar. It is a fifteen-minute drive from most of the township and a fireworks night is usually attached to at least one weekend home stand.

The through-line

The story Bridgewater is telling this summer is not that a single new thing arrived. It is that the everyday drive is turning over. In the same season, the township added its first Chick-fil-A, its first Barrio Burrito Bar, a Brazilian steakhouse across from the Cheesecake Factory, a French bistro cluster in the mall's Village, an Indian BYOB on the Branchburg line, and the approvals for a twelve-suite indoor golf hall inside a former rug showroom. That is a lot of small, permanent choices being made about what this piece of Somerset County looks like for the next decade.

The free Sunday concert is still free. What surrounds it is not the same place.
